Democritus and his teacher Leuccipus developed a theory called atomism. In atomism, there are two fundamental yet opposing bodies (both of which are invisiable); there are atoms and void (empty space). Atoms were thought to be unchangable objects that moved around the void to form compounds. The word atom came from the word atomos meaning "uncauttable". Though Democritus believed atoms differed in shape, size, mass, position, and arrangement he believed atoms were homogeneous (no internal structure). He also believed solids were made of small pointy atoms while liquids were made of large round ones and oils were made of atoms that could easily slip past eachother. Sour things were believed to be made of sharp atoms and sweet things were made of smooth atoms. This description best matched the yahoo answers. :P This may help.. :)
