Culture Change Upon arrival, Native Americans faced new challenges. Tribes used to large areas had less space and depended more on farming. Conflict over leadership caused violence within the tribes. Hunting-ground borders and old grudges between tribes also led to violence. Death was still frequent due to outbreaks of smallpox and cholera. Ultimately, even Indian Territory became a target for white settlement. Settlers and the federal government broke the treaties. Resistance and violence continued late into the 19th century as more tribes faced removal.
