The No Child Left Behind Act, enacted by Congress in 2001, sets nationwide standards for improving public education by the end of the 2013-14 school year. All students, regardless of race, income, or language ability, must be able to read and do math by 2014. To achieve these goals, the state has created standards and tests to measure progress. How has this legislation impacted local school districts?

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

It's all about the test scores in Math and Language Arts. Extreme focus has been placed on raising test scores, especially in sub-groups. Schools give extra help to students who, statistically, will raise their test scores over helping all students do better in all subjects. History, music, and vocational arts, among other subjects have been relegated to lesser roles because they are not directly tested. Science did not suffer the same because of STEM initiatives. Millions of dollars have been spent on materials and courses devoted to doing well on tests. Learning and knowledge are not the goal. Schools have been closed and administrators unemployed because of a few points on a test score scale.
