what function do enzymes serve?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Welcome to OpenStudy. Try this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enzyme You can answer it by basically looking at the definition of enzymes. Or, you can look up the function of enzymes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's job is to mainly break down complex substance into more simpler forms of molecules Substrate------>Product

OpenStudy (anonymous):

enzymes speed up chemical reactions :)

OpenStudy (alistairgarratt):

Enzymes are biological catalysts, i.e. they reduce the activation energy of a biochemical reaction, such that this reaction occurs with much faster kinetics, e.g. the enzyme catalase, found in the liver, results in several thousand-fold increase production of oxygen from peroxide. Enzymes are more typically composed of amino acids i.e. proteins, but some are composed of RNA (ribozymes).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dang! I totally forgot all about the activation energy >xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

enzymes.....they serve as biological catalysts, meaning they accelerate the rate of body reaction without themselves participating in the reaction..
