I have to write an essay on (why) "The national minimum wage should be increased" and I came up with some ideas already in my outline, but I'm trying to think of a few reasons why employers would want to raise minimum wage. Does anyone have a few ideas on "why employers would want to raise minimum wage?" Also note, this is for a persuasive/argument paper. Not sure if this is the right subject area for this question, but if anyone has any ideas, thanks in advance.
All I say is that if you were to get a job that pays minimum wage you would be paid more

Hi SakuraAiken, There are plenty of benefits for raising the minimum wage. Here are some Ideas that you may consider. 1) Employers want to be above the poverty line. 2) They wont be burdened from extravagant debts. 3) Raising the minimum wage will also provide families with a decent salary without depending on government assistance, such as food stamps, housing, and welfare. etc...
To show you have given the topic due thought, include some of the disadvantages of raising the minimum wage, the biggest being that some low-value workers will likely lose their jobs and perhaps some low-value businesses will close.
Chris and Dauglas, thank you both for some great ideas. I had already had a friend suggest that smaller businesses would likely close due to an increased minimum wage, and also that some people might lose jobs. Here is a thought that I had, but I haven't looked into it - With the new requirements that employers give employees certain healthcare benefits (I think is for employees who work full time, or over a certain amount of hours), employers and employees would benefit because they could hire more people as part time (more jobs) and still pay the employees more than what they are making now. The downside to that would be less hours - in which case, employees would just likely have to get more than one job. What do you think?

If minimum wage was raised then people wouldn't need to work 2-3 jobs, they wouldn't leave jobs for better paying ones so employers would have a lower turn over rate. and employees would call in sick less often because they would have higher self esteem being able to provide for their family and wouldn't have to work multiple jobs.
A national minimum wage, along with mandated health insurance are characteristics of a command economy. The government decides which businesses can stay in business. That tends to limit competition and breed mediocrity. What motivation do employees have for trying to do better if they have all their needs taken care of? Additional government requirements makes it harder for new businesses to start. It also makes sending jobs overseas more appealing to businesses who can. Also, jobs for teenagers and inexperienced people dry up when the minimum wage goes up. Those jobs eventually come back, but only when businesses have been able to raise prices enough to afford them again.
