OpenStudy (calculusxy):

What is the opposite of the opposite of 8 1/2? A. +(+ 8 1/2) B. - (- 8 1/2) C. +(- 8 1/2) D. -(+ 8 1/2)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well it would be a positive number If the opposite is a negative number....then the opposite of that is a positive number.. Which can be resembled as the negative of a negative -(- 8 1/2)

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Why can't it be C? @johnweldon1993

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Because when you multiply a positive number by a negative number you get a negative

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

This is not really going to my mind right now. My logic is that the opposite of 8 1/2 is -8 1/2. Then the opposite of -8 1/2 is 8 1/2. I believe that this is like listing the process of first having the negative 8 1/2 and then put the positive sign outside of it +(- 8 1/2)

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

And doesn't A and B resemble the same idea of being positive like this?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Correct it is....but + and + means the opposite was never implemented... and as you know every time you multiply by a negative you change the sign

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So how does multiplication come into finding the opposite of a number?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@agent0smith

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Well it doesn't really I was just pointing out that whenever you multiply a number by a negative number...you get the opposite sign.. so opposite of 4 is -4...and opposite of that is -(-4)

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

iirc the opposite just means the negative of the number

OpenStudy (mathmale):

The "opposite of the opposite of a postive number " is just the number you started with. I wouldn't spend too much time on this particular problem....please move on and come back to this problem if you're still not clear what the correct procedure is.
