QUESTIONS ABOUT ECOSYSTEM!! will give medals to whoever answers the most define ecosystem why do organisms need energy why do consumers only get 10% of their prey where does the rest of the energy go?

@hartnn @ParthKohli @whpalmer4 @thomaster @ganeshie8 someone please help ... please

Why do organisms need energy Organisms need energy because everything we do involves using energy, even on the cellular level. Since energy cannot be created, organisms need to take in existing energy and convert it in order to survive Why do consumers only get 10% of their prey The efficiency with which energy or biomass is transferred from one trophic level to the next is called the ecological efficiency. Consumers at each level convert on average only about 10% of the chemical energy in their food to their own organic tissue (the ten percent law). For this reason, food chains rarely extend for more than 5 or 6 levels. At the lowest trophic level (the bottom of the food chain), plants convert about 1% of the sunlight they receive into chemical energy. It follows from this that the total energy originally present in the incident sunlight that is finally embodied in a tertiary consumer is about 0.001% :D

Ecosystem is a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

@Alexaalexi for the second one, is there any simple way to put it lol?

OpenStudy (petiteme):

Why do consumers only get 10% of their prey? As they move up the food chain, there is less energy available. Animals located at the top of the food chain needs a lot more food to meet their energy needs. 10% of energy gets transferred from a producer to a consumer. The other 90% is eliminated at heat.

OpenStudy (petiteme):

In everything we do, it involves energy. We use energy.

OpenStudy (petiteme):

Lastly, The other 90% is eliminated at heat.

@petiteme thank you sooooooo much

Awhh :) You're welcome ^_^
