Nomenclature: Should I write hydrochloric acid as HCl(aq) or just HCl? I got a quiz question wrong for writing HCl(aq) - I thought the (aq) was supposed to be used to distinguish the formula from hydrogen chloride

You can just write HCl without the Aqueous symbol

It is better to include the (aq), to distinguish hydrochloric acid from HCl(g), hydrogen chloride. Ask your teacher how you would know whether to name it as hydrogen chloride or hydrochloric acid, if you are just given the formula, HCl. Hopefully your teacher will have a second look at your answer and give you the mark that you deserve for your answer.

will do, thanks :)

I withdraw what I said before, its actually really good practice to write the (aq) symbol after the HCl, I was just being silly and forgot you put nomenclature down as the sub topic.
