OpenStudy (phi):

I would first "cross multiply" can you do that?

OpenStudy (cookiemonster2412):

5y^2=2000

OpenStudy (phi):

looks good. any idea what the next step is ?

OpenStudy (cookiemonster2412):

not sure

OpenStudy (phi):

*any* idea ?

OpenStudy (cookiemonster2412):

divide both sides by 5?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. that is a good idea. why ? because on the left side 5/5 is 1 which leaves us with y^2 without any number. that is closer to getting y by itself.

OpenStudy (cookiemonster2412):

so it would be y^2=400 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes.

OpenStudy (cookiemonster2412):

that's it ?

OpenStudy (phi):

to find y from y^2 you take the square root to keep the equation in balance, you take the square root of both sides of the =
