what is the reason for the sensitivity of mimosa pudica?

Miracrown (miracrown):

so it is a plant... what do you mean by sensitivity? like how it curls when touched?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes.

Miracrown (miracrown):

Alright so plants don't have muscles or anything, the thing that changes the most is how much water in its cells.

Miracrown (miracrown):

so if more water is in the cell, the cell is more stiff

Miracrown (miracrown):

if less water is the cell, the cell will be droopy and flaccid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mimosa have more water or less water??

Miracrown (miracrown):

so what do you think would happen if one side of the leaves get turgid and the other side all get flaccid?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the leaf shrinks?

Miracrown (miracrown):

mimosa is just a normal plant but it can change its cells quickly to your question.

Miracrown (miracrown):

and yes right, so if all the cells become flaccid then the leaves kind of shrink in - If one side of leaf gets turgid, the leaf gets pushed the other way

Miracrown (miracrown):

anyway, this is kind of how the plant can "move" its leaves when touched even though it doesnt have muscles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u soo much.

Miracrown (miracrown):

yw :]
