Which of the following is an effect of the Alien and Sedition Acts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The Alien and Sedition Acts were a series of laws passed by Congress in 1798 to silence opposition to an expected war with France. It was supported by President Adams and his Federalist Party which controlled Congress. It was opposed by the Democratic-Republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The Acts were unpopular with many people because it was seen as a violation of freedom. Jefferson and Madison challenged the constitutionality of the Alien and Sedition Acts in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions. These Resolutions became part of the Democratic-Republic Party platform in the 1800 presidential election. In that election President Adams and the Federalists were defeated. The Acts expired in 1801. The Federalists lost control of the national government. The Federalists never again were in power and they ceased to exist after 1816. As far as foreign policy is concerned. The Federalists who had passed the Acts in 1798 were opposed to France. Now that the Acts expired relations with France improved. The Democratic-Republicans, who were now in power, favored France over Great Britain. The U.S. and France signed a peace agreement. Soon the U.S. had trouble with Great Britain and found itself involved in the 1812 War. I hope that this has been a help to you.
