OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Has anyone read "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding? What do the changes to the signal fire represent? A. the need for reliance on each other B. a gauge of the boys' desire to return to civilization C. the boys' inability to accept their situation D. a sense of helplessness for everyone

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

If I understood the question correctly, then it means that the changes to the signal fire is when Jack and his tribe used the fire to cook the pig and they don't use the fire to get rescued. That means that they don't care about being rescued because the fire is the only way for them to get rescued off the island, and they don't care about returning to there regular civilization. I don't think it's C because Jack and his tribe accepted there situation and are now savages. Can someone explain this question more for me?

I've never read it :P but B or D seem the most reasonable options and from your explanation, B might be the better choice? perhaps because they change the signals of the fire based on how much they want to go home?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

I think D might have meant that they felt helpless to the point that they gave up hope of being rescued

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Actually, at the beginning of the book, they start the fire to attract a passing ship, but in chapter 4, one of the boys who where supposed to keep the fire going left it for hunting then a ship actually passes by and the fire was out

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

So Jack actually doesn't care about being rescued, only about hunting. I don't think it's B :P

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

then idk xD

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Lol, alright :P

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

And for D, can you add more to that explanation? :P I think you got something there, it makes sense :D

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

lol that's all I've got sorry :P

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Lol, ok, thanks :)
