It is in our interest to support the current government of Ukraine. They are an ally and a trading partner. We should not ignore a friend in need. As the world's first and most powerful democracy, we have an obligation to uphold the ideals of liberty. That doesn't mean we put "boots on the ground" everywhere there is tyranny. But we do oppose tyranny and support free people whenever we can. Crimea was forcefully taken by Russia. Russia's been doing a lot of that lately. Chechnya was independent for a few years, South Ossieta was part of Georgia. Now both are part of Russia. Putin always gives the same excuse. He's protecting ethnic Russians in the areas he occupies. The situation is very similar to Czechoslovakia and Hungry in the 1950s. Democracy in those countries were snuffed out quickly by the Soviets. Communism may be gone, but the Russian lust for control of it's neighbors is alive and well. I know your question was "What's in it for us?" My answer is we need to stop bullies were ever we can and not worry about what is in it for us.
