What is the different between an equation and inequality

OpenStudy (amistre64):

nothing really ... visually, one represents an area, the other a line

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No an equation has an equal sign and inequality has the signs

OpenStudy (amistre64):

an equal sign is part of the set of inequality signs ....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

they have visual differences ... but they are the same object mathematically

An equation shows a specific value for a question. Example: 5x = 15 | x = 3 An inequality will give you a range of values, it is not as specific as an equation. And yes, inequalities use > and < signs, not =. Example: 5x > 15 | x > 3 x can anything greater than 3. This isnt a good idea but it gets the gist of what Im trying to explain to you. So all in all, An equation is a mathematical statement that shows the equal value of two expressions while an inequality is a mathematical statement that shows that an expression is lesser than or more than the other.

@amistre64 Really?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

really

I meant good example, not good idea.
