Which of the following sets includes only irrational numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

following??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look at this picture, it's clear enough.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. SQR54, 5/14, 10.1212, 10/13 B. SQR19, PI, 13.4, 1.89123 C. SQR16, 1/17, 15.4 (4 repeatedly), SQR 49 D. SQR 12, PI, SQR 40. 3.51001

By the way, dear user, you can put up a √ symbol the following way. 1) Click and Hold ALT 2) Click 2 5 1 (click the numbers on the right of the keyboard, not the ones above) 3) Release ALT

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cool, Did not know that. thanks.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, can you exclude any choices? Look at the choice C. \[Hint:~16=4^2\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so that one is out because it is a perfect square. also because 7^2 is 49

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[Also,~√49~is~rational,~\it~=7\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, so C is not going to be the option we choose.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, ok. But how can you tell if a fraction is irrational? Do you square it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fractions are all rational:) Decimals are rational and irrational. For choice A ask yourself the following question: is repeating decimal a rational or irrational number? For choice B ask is 13.4 rational? (doesn't look like decimal should be going further, looks like it's the only decimal)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh my goodness, I am so crazy... the 4 is repeated.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that leaves D because irrational decimals do not repeat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In choice C it's repeated, and repeated decimal is rational, for example if you say 0.3333... (repeatedly) that would be just 1/3. So repeating decimal is rational. Also we already excluded choice C because it has 2 perfect squares... B is also rational b/c of "13.4" So.. YEAH, CORRECT, it's D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have a good one:)

Thank you so MUCH!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Especially for explaining it so now I can figure it all out for myself!
