What were the Legacy of the Crusades
The result of the Crusades was a Muslim victory. Although the First Crusade captured Jerusalem in 1099, it was retaken by Saladin in 1187, less than a century later, and the Third through Eighth Crusades all failed to capture the city for Christendom again. The last Crusader possession in the Holy Land, the city of Acre, was recaptured in 1291; Christian armies were not to return to the region successfully until WW1. However the legacy of the Crusades was much more advantageous for Western Christendom. The Crusades brought large numbers of Western European nobles, clergy, and scholars into prolonged close contact with the much more sophisticated Muslim and Byzantine civilizations and cultures in the region. New knowledge gained from this contact was gradually transmitted back to Europe and ultimately led to the Renaissance.
