Is the sample representative of the population? population: swimmers sample: every 5th person entering the community pool A. representative B. not representative

Miracrown (miracrown):

What do you think? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A

Miracrown (miracrown):

Ok. Could you explain your thinking? So I know you're on the right track?

Miracrown (miracrown):

Are you familiar with the different types of sampling?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guesses..

Miracrown (miracrown):

Great! What type of sampling is this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the ans correct

Miracrown (miracrown):

that's alright. does stratified sampling ring a bell? OK a quick question Does the problem say the the population is the swimmers in the community pool? Or just swimmers in general?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanku ....so A is correct

Miracrown (miracrown):

I'm sorry I have to correct an earlier statement. the sample is systematic, not stratified Sorry, mixed them up because they both start with s...

Miracrown (miracrown):

So the answer is not exactly correct.

Miracrown (miracrown):

Do you want to try and guess why?

Miracrown (miracrown):

It has something to do with sampling from the community

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Koikkara @Destinymasha

Miracrown (miracrown):

So because it's sampling just from one community pool, we are not getting a representative sample from all swimmers all over the world. That one location could a population with a certain trait that allows them to swim super fast or super slow. And you could get a skewed result from that one location.

Miracrown (miracrown):

Does this make sense? Do you want me to go back and explain anything I've said so far? So therefore the answer should be B - not representative!
