Need help finding area of scalene triangle. Thanks! Medals for everyone!

OpenStudy (p0sitr0n):

I=x^2-x from 0 to 4. so 4^2-4 - 0^2+0 = 16-4=12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct me if I'm wrong but wouldnt you just take the integral of that (giving you x^2-3x\4,0 and then plugging the numbers in you get 16-12 and the answer from then should be 4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

both wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: Recall that |z| = z if z is nonnegative, and |z| = -z if z is negative. Use this fact to remove the absolute value from the integrand, splitting the integral over two separate ranges of integration if needed.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh poop yes that makes sense your'e going to want to separate the integral to where it is positive and negative and by setting 2x-3= 0 we can see that x = 3/2 so you're going to do one integral of that equation from 0 to 3/2 and then another from 3/2 to 4 make them both positive and then add them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lemme know if you need help with the actual integration part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i do, thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay math!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah math is cool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay when you take the integral which is x^2-3x you're going to plug in your new limits of 0 and 3/2 which give you the value of -9/4 but since were taking the absolute value that makes it positive. the second integral from 3/2 to 4 gives you 25/4 adding the two you get 34/4 or 17/2 hopefully. sorry this is all mental math since i have no paper

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct thanks for the help, ill look over your notes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome. I you need more help I'm procrastinating studying for my nuclear chemistry test so I'l be here lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to each to his own..i couldn't do that stuff, im an econ major. have fun mate

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you need calc for econ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i started a little late on the math cause i wasn't sure what i was going to major in. Im a sophomore but ill be finishing calc 3 by this fall so i can take an actual stats course as opposed to those "stats workshop" type classes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ahh I gotcha. I'm in calc 3 at Purdue at the moment. Have fun! and have a great day!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you to bro, go spartans

OpenStudy (anonymous):

too*
