33. Respiration a. What happens to the ribs and diaphragm when a person inhales? Exhales

OpenStudy (adamconner):

when you inhale: the chest cavity increases in volume. the diaphragm goes down, the external intercostal muscles in the ribs move the ribs up and out. this gives the lungs more space to fill up. we are not actually sucking the air in, the oxygen is diffusing inside because there is less pressure in the cavity. when you exhale: it's pretty much the opposite. the chest cavity decreases in volume, pressure increases, the diaphragm goes up, the internal intercostal muscles in the ribs move the ribs down and in to their normal position, and the air diffuses out
