How did the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor change the public's opinion about the war?
before Pearl Harbor WWII was seen mostly as "their" war. once Japan bombed US soil it became "our" war.
Isolationists had a lot of influence before Pearl Harbor in convincing the general populace that the US should not get involved in the war in Europe. They essentially tied Roosevelt's hands in that regard (Lend-Lease was as far as he could really go) and believed that Europe's problems weren't their problems. Charles Lindbergh, the guy that was the first to fly solo across the Atlantic and an American hero, was one of their most visible advocates and was even suspected of being a Nazi sympathizer (he wasn't, but he was certainly bigoted if not misguided). Then Pearl Harbor happened proving the isolationists wrong. After that, no one wanted to hear what they had to say anymore.
