Is g(f(-7)) defined? Why or why not?

geerky42 (geerky42):

That depends on what f(x) and g(x) are.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh well f(x)=\[3x+7\] g(x)=\[2\sqrt{x-3}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@geerky42

geerky42 (geerky42):

First, let find just f(-7). Do you know how to do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ya I get that i just have no idea what "defined" means

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(-7)=-14

geerky42 (geerky42):

well, it's kind of ambiguous for your problem. Something obvious like 1/0 or ∞ is undefined, basically something that is not number or cannot be calculated. Undefined things has no meaning. Imaginary number sometime can be considered undefined... Is that clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if its a real number it is defined

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or a number that you can write

geerky42 (geerky42):

well, yeah basically. Real number is defined.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you very much sir or ma'm

geerky42 (geerky42):

sir. You are welcome!
