OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

What is the correct order of the following numbers? -17 over 10, -2, -(1.2)^2

Miracrown (miracrown):

What do you think?

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

-17 over 10, -2, -1.2

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

i should do the math

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

1.44 -1.7, -2 those are my answers, so in an order I would put....1.44, -1.7, -2

Miracrown (miracrown):

Right but be careful -(1.2)^2 actually comes out to -1.44 so while it's bigger than -2 it's important to keep this in mind, if it was -(1.5)^2, then that would come out to -2.25 which is smaller than -2 do you see what I mean?

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

yes!!!

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

- (1.2)2 < -17 over 10 < -2 -2 < - < -17 over 10(1.2)2 - < -2 < -17 over 10(1.2)2

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

A right?

Miracrown (miracrown):

in this case it's b -2 < -17/10 < -(1.2)^2

Miracrown (miracrown):

if you are using the '<' sign, then we have to put them in order of smallest to largest

OpenStudy (chrisneedshelp):

wow I didnt know that, does it have to do with > greater than less than <?

Miracrown (miracrown):

right, exactly -2 is less than -17/10 is less than -(1.2)^2
