A rectangle has length three times it's width. It's area is 147cm2. Use an algebraic method to work out it's dimensions.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'd suggest you let x represent the width. Then, in terms of the width, x, what is the length of the rectangle? Write out an algebraic expression for the length. Hope you won't mind my being picky: please write "three times its width," not "three times it's width." Same with "it's dimensions:" you mean "its dimensions." "it's" is an abbreviation for "it is."

Oh sorry it was in a maths booklet of mine

OpenStudy (mathmale):

width = x length = a function of x = ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait so how do i find out the lengths, do i do perimeter?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

"A rectangle has length three times its width" translates into length = 3x, if the width is x.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

What is the area of this rectangle, if the width is x and the length is 3x? I'm sure you've found areas before.

Ohhhh i see i didn't read the question properly

Thanks!

So i times them
