There is an identity, tan²x+1=sec²x tan²x+1=sec²x subtract tan²x from both sides, and you will get... 1=sec²x-tan²x See? it is in fact equal to 1.

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

start with \[\sin^2 + \cos^2 = 1\] divide every term by cos^2.... then rewrite it with the trig ratios on the same side of the equation
