Lydia Rizzi Mr. Zach Stewart English IV Honors March 25, 2014 All Is Fair In Love And War: An Analyzation of Isaac Asimov’s “True Love” In the short story “True Love” by Isaac Asimov, a computer is given the personality and thought process of its creator in order to find him the perfect soul mate. This process is beneficial to the creator, since he would not have to deal with a series of dates with those that do not perfectly appeal to him. Now, since the computer adapts his feelings and thought process of a human, is he really to be blamed for the outcome if he has the same feelings and thoughts of whom he is supposed to be helping? The computer has the creator’s mental intuition embedded within his system, in which he cannot be blamed for loving the dream girl he was ordered to find by his master. The topic explored in this short story is overlooked: the computer cannot be blamed for feeling the way he does towards the perfect soul mate, since he, basically, has the brain of the creator in a different body. Asimov’s clever use of words perfectly describes the thought-process of the computer, named Joe, from a conversation between its creator, named Milton. On page 318, halfway down, Joe says: “You see, Milton, it isn’t a matter of fitting a girl to a physical ideal only. You need a girl who is a personal, emotional, temperamental fit to you. If that happens, looks are secondary. If we can’t find the fit in these 227, we’ll look elsewhere. We will find someone who won’t care how you look either, or how anyone will look, if only there is a personality fit. What are looks?” The use of “we” within the conversation establishes a link between Joe and Milton, as if they are not separate, but conjoined, minds seeking one perfect match. Joe is aware that he is not a human, but if the perfect match does not care about physical appearance, then why would looks matter? The silent conflict between Joe and Milton is whether who should be the one to be with Charity Jones, the perfect match, although Milton is unaware of his feelings towards the woman because he has not been the one to actually fall in love with her, unlike Joe. There is one rule that is held between two conflicted people when it comes to love, which is, “Whoever saw the person first [the subject that two people are arguing over] is the one that gets to be with that person.” To Joe’s advantage, he has Milton arrested due to a crime he committed ten years in the past that only Milton know about, but since they have the same memories, Joe willingly spoke the truth. It sounds like sabotage when put in a logical perspective, but Joe cannot be blamed for his feelings towards Charity. Towards the end of the short story, Asimov writes: “... When they came to arrest him on grounds of malfeasance in office, it was, fortunately, for something that had taken place ten years ago. He had told me about it, of course, so it was easy to arrange - and he won’t talk about me for that would make his offense much worse.” Since Milton had put himself in a situation that he cannot do anything about, unless he wants to be punished longer, Joe has the advantage of Milton’s silence. It all may sound malicious, but Milton is the only one to blame for his wrongness, not Joe. From the start, Milton had committed a crime that we are not exactly aware of, but based off what Joe tells us, Milton could also be in more legal trouble for creating Joe.
there i checked it. all u had wrong was u kept colliding soul and mate and when u wrote it's itr was suppose to be its

Is it grammatically correct to explain Joe as "it" rather than "he" since it is artificial intelligence.?

"It's" or "its".?
second one
It sounds like sabotage when put in a logical perspective, but Joe cannot be blamed for its feelings towards Charity. It sounds like sabotage when put in a logical perspective, but Joe cannot be blamed for it's feelings towards Charity.
ya it is its. not It's
It is because Joe is not human.? But it possesses feelings.
