Darryl wants to add enough water to 8 gallons of a 10% bleach solution to make a 5% bleach solution. Which equation can he use to find x, the number of gallons of water he should add?

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

How much bleach is there in that many gallons of a 10% bleach solution?

OpenStudy (radar):

Let x = amt (in gal) of water to be added. Calculate amount of bleach in the 10% solution. (8 + x) .05 will equal the amount of bleach that exists in the original solution. All you have to do is make the calculation as requested by whpalmer4 2 hrs ago.

OpenStudy (radar):

Substitute the results you obtain in: (8 + x) .05 = ____________.

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

Another way of thinking about it is that a 10% solution is 1 part bleach in 10 parts of solution. A 5% solution is 1 part bleach in twice as many parts of solution.
