PLEASE HELP ASAP:( What are the possible number of positive real, negative real, and complex zeros of f(x) = -7x4 - 12x3 + 9x2 - 17x + 3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this a problem using rational root theorem by any chance?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To be honest I don't know @Rose6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it seems like it could be a possible question under that category… but i would say the answer is 4 because with questions involving the rational root theorem that ask for the number of zeros all you have to do is look at the leading coefficient in this case… it is \[-7x^4\] then you look at the power it is raised to which is 4 that means there will be 4 zeros total. does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:( that's not one of the answers @Rose6 the following are the possible answers Positive Real: 3 or 1 Negative Real: 1 Complex: 2 or 0 Positive Real: 3 or 1 Negative Real: 2 or 0 Complex: 1 Positive Real: 1 Negative Real: 3 or 1 Complex: 2 or 0 Positive Real: 4, 2 or 0 Negative Real: 1 Complex: 0 or 1 or 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok one sec.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have you tried plugging each possible answer back into the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No , I haven't I don't no how to figure out the answer on my own @Rose6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let me try to plug them in and if it works I'll show you step by step how to do it is that ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes please if you don't mind @Rose6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could I graph it ? @Rose6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think that's the best way because every possible way i've done it it won't work… by suggestion is to graph it on a calculator and then click 2nd graph for the table and look for the answers you have. they should have zeros with it so like (3,0) because your answers are the x's and you are looking for the ones that have the y as 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes :) thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry I couldn't help you T.T

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you for trying though :D @Rose6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem… hope it works out for you
