Two shopping carts are pushed with the same amount of force. However, one shopping cart has a greater mass than the other. How does the mass of the shopping carts affect their acceleration? A. The shopping cart with the most mass will accelerate less than the shopping cart with the least mass when the same force is applied. B. The shopping cart with the most mass will accelerate more than the shopping cart with the least mass when the same force is applied. C. Both shopping carts will accelerate at the same rate, since it is force and not mass that determi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is C and D?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

from the Newton's second law \(F=ma\), acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass so as the mass increases, the acceleration decreases.. so which one do you think is the best answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope, remember the other shopping cart has a GREATER mass than the other one, which means that the acceleration will be? (remember the second law)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i don't see any "D" from the choices and btw, don't guess , try to understand it, this will help you a lot ;p

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why "B" ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah, you got the point, the accelerate will decrease... but read choice "B" again, does it follow your point? letter b says that if the mass is greater, the acceleration will increase, which doesn't make sense do you get what i mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i understand now its A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain why? (i'm just making sure that you are not guessing :))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah sure...because If you double the mass then the acceleration is halved, with the same force. Also from the Newton's second law F=ma, acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass so as the mass increases, the acceleration decreases.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes!! right! ^_^
