the following data shows wind speed in a city, in miles per hour,on consecutive days of the month. 9.4,9.2,9.7,9.8,9.4,9.7,9.6,9.3,9.2,9.1,9.4 which box plot represents the data?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d

@beccaboo333

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

I am not sure, I'm not very good with this kind of math. I mainly work in other sections.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

Okay, so first, what are the mean, median and modes of the data set?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mode:9.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mean:9.4

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

Okay so with the box and whisker plot, it uses a five-number summary. The minum, QI (first quartile), which is the median of the lower half of the data. Then there's Q2 which is the median(middle) of the total data set. then Q3 which is the median(middle) of the upper half of the data set. Then, lastly, Q4, the highest data value. so rearranging 9.4, 9.2, 9.7, 9.8, 9.4, 9.7, 9.6, 9.3, 9.2, 9.1,9.4 into least to greatest, what would you get?

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

Sorry about that, I was thinking of another graphing way. We don't need the mean or mode yet

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is the answer b?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Jadeishere

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

Sorry I;m trying to help several people at the same time >.<

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

I'm looking at it

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

Well it all makes sense, they all match up, except for 9.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so b is correct?

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

the median of the total data set, would actually be 9.4. So, no, not correct. Look at either c or D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay so c?

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

No. Did you even look at it? 9.1 is the minimum number, 9.2 is the middle of the lowerhalf, 9.4 is the median of the total data set, 9.7 is the middle of the upper half and 9.8 is the maximum. Look again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

Exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (jadeishere):

Yep :)
