Why was public opinion split over the Vietnam war?
@wwhitlock
Johnson didn't sell it very well. It was ill conceived and war was never declared. The Gulf of Tonkin resolution gave the president a blank check. It was very hard to see exactly what our national interest in Viet Nam could be. Because of a unclear mission, and the newly developed ability of television to bring the war into America's living rooms, opposition to the war grew. So the first war Americans see every night on the news is also one that is ill conceived and not being fought to win by a president who would really rather not have to think about it. Sort of a perfect storm for an unpopular war.
Didn't I already answer this today?
