What does postmodernism in literature mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have to write a paper on postmodernism for a paper. I don't really get what it means. I was wondering if someone could give me the heads up, maybe a website with a good definition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a late-20th-century style and concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism that represents a departure from modernism and has at its heart a general distrust of grand theories and ideologies as well as a problematical relationship with any notion of “art.”] this is the definition of postmodernism

Thanks:), but can you name a few examples? I'm still not very sure.

Postmodernism is often seen as a reaction against modernism. Modernism was often seen as an elitist form of writing: it spoke to the educated upper classes, it was difficult and obscure, making complex literary references. Postmodernism frequently involves pop cultural references: to comics, to pop art, to TV shows and movies. Postmodernism is also often characterized by fragmentation: there is no clear or continuous plot or characters; the story is broken up, disjointed or confused. Postmodernism rejects hierarchy; it embraces a literary free-for-all. Postmodernist writers include William S Burroughs, Jorge Borges, Kafka, Samuel Beckett and Laurence Sterne (who was actually an 18th century novelist - postmodernism only became really popular in the 20th century, but it existed before that). lol i copied and pasted it but change so words
