Mr. Becker just drove across the state to visit his daughter in college. For the first hour of his trip, his average speed was 38 mph. For the next five hours of his trip, his average speed was 60 mph. For the final two hours of his trip, his average speed was 49 mph. To the nearest mph, what was Mr. Becker's average speed for the entire trip? 48 mph 55 mph 49 mph 25 mph

Just like last time add up 38, 60, and 49 then divide by 3. That will be your answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 49 mph

OpenStudy (shiraz14):

And remember to factor in the time travelled at each speed & round the answer - the exact answer is not one of the options.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes @ctfxcfan1 that's correct.

OpenStudy (shiraz14):

Use the formula Σfx/Σf to find the mean.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually you missed something the answer is 55

OpenStudy (shiraz14):

(38*1 + 60*5 + 49*2) / 8 = 54.5 ~ 55mph (rounded to the nearest integer)
