Music is a powerful medium of expression. For many artists, music provides a platform for reflecting on current and past events. In 1990, the Australian band Midnight Oil released the song Blue Sky Mine. The song featured strong vocals and haunting lyrics about the plight of the town of Wittenoom, the site of blue asbestos mining. When the mine closed in 1966, residents of the town lost their main source of income. In addition, workers suffered from lung damage; it is predicted that 25% of the miners will die from asbestos related illness. Today, the once booming town has been reduced to a ghost town of only 50 residents. The song was one way to express outrage and increase public awareness of an environmental, economic, and political issue. Choose one song from the 1960s- to the present day that focuses on a political or social issue. It can be a protest song or a song in support of an event or policy, such as civil rights or the rights of women. Focus on a couple of lines to one stanza of the lyrics. You will need to include these lines in your discussion answer. You may want to use a search engine if you need to find lyrics the song or to find a song based on a specific issue. If you need more context on the event or song, you may use your textbook or Internet sources. Be sure to include the name of the artist (or band) and date the song was released. Please answer the parts 1–3. This discussion board is worth 15 points. 1.What issue does the artist address in the song? What perspective does the artist take on the issue? 2.How do the lyrics or the music reflect the artist’s perspective of the issue? What is the artist’s connection to the issue? 3.What do the lyrics reflect about the time during which the song was written? What is the history behind the event or idea represented in the song? (Note: Please do not include any lyrics containing drug references or obscenities.)

There's a song called Get Up Stand Up by Bob Marley. I haven't actually heard it, but it's about standing up for your rights. "Get up, stand up: stand up for your rights!" "I know you don't know What life is really worth. It's not all that glitters is gold; 'Alf the story has never been told:" The lyrics are really moving in this piece, but it's constantly just, "Stand up for your rights" and "What you gonna do?" You want my advice? Use this piece for your paper, and I bet you would get a really good grade.
