OpenStudy (tanya123):

If my laptop asks for replacing the battery, will everything still be the same ?

OpenStudy (tanya123):

@Nurali @robtobey @iambatman @e.mccormick

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't think the battery keeps the memory ;)

OpenStudy (phi):

I think you can just replace the battery.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

so my data will still remain ?

OpenStudy (konradzuse):

They tell you to replace the battery because it's charge might not keep as long. You DO NOT need to replace it if you use it at your desk, plugged in. If you are mobile, without your plug however you will have a short battery life. ALL functions remain the same. You also can check your power options by clicking on the battery/plug in the notifcations tab in the bottom right, then click "Power Options" There will be an option there to adjust all sorts of things from cpu usage, to monitor brightness, etc. Good luck.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

There are many reasons the hardware monitoring software might tell you to replace a battery. Due to the shorts that have caused meltdowns, some monitoring systems are pretty advanced when it comes to batteries. Another interesting thing is that when it comes to Lithium Ion batteries, it is not good to charge them all the time. I have seen new machines that reduce the charging circuit to allow the battery to very slowly discharge even when plugged in so that they are only actively charging every few weeks when it reaches 50%. A battery is usually not even required by a laptop. As KZ pointed out, you can run directly off of wall power.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

nooo... I am talking about the other battery

OpenStudy (tanya123):

OpenStudy (tanya123):

OpenStudy (tanya123):

@KonradZuse & @e.mccormick

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That is the battery I am talking about.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

ok ! so should I replace the battery ?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

If you want to use it as a portable, yes.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

it says "there's a problem with your battery so your computer might shutdown suddenly"

OpenStudy (tanya123):

I have a samsung x420 laptop... I dont think I'll find the battery! pretty old

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

http://www.laptopbatteryhq.com/samsung-x420-battery.html And found about 40 other places that have it.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

ok cool.... Thanks ! ok but after changing there will be no effects on the laptop or data ?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The battry only has to do with use when not plugged in. That is it.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

All I did to find the battery was: https://www.google.com/search?q=samsung+x420+laptop+battery You might adjust the search if needed, and it is always best to look for customer reviews of the store.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

ok

OpenStudy (tanya123):

Thanks a lot =') @e.mccormick and @KonradZuse

OpenStudy (rsmith6559):

When you replace the battery on a computer system, all the stuff on the hard drive is untouched ( assuming you shut down nicely ). There are some settings in the PROM that will need resetting. Time is one of them, while the battery is out the time will reset to some zero value. The machine may not boot because all the programs have a modification time after what the machine thinks is the current time. You just have to reset the time and it will boot. It may take a little longer to boot because it has to rediscover the hardware that's attached to it.

OpenStudy (tanya123):

oh ok ! makes sense thanks a lot =)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

@rsmith6559 The laptop power battery and CMOS battery are separate. The icon she has done a screen shot for is the power battery. If it was the CMOS battery, there would be a different warning on startup by the BIOS and not the environment.
