Why do we use "square root signs," I see no use of them, since exponents to me are more intuitive, so what is the actual reason we use square root signs?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Good question :)

OpenStudy (primeralph):

Visibility. Sign restriction.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

maybe becuase\[\sqrt[4]{x^7}\]looks better than\[x^{4/7}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Haha maybe for some people, but for me it's more confusing :d When I see exponents it's just boom, boom, boom, and I'm done. But the radical signs actually cause me to stop for a sec and think about it.

OpenStudy (aravindg):

Mathematicians have their own methods of showing different functions. Better said they like bringing in new symbols for various processes |x|,{x},sqrt{x} are examples. If you prefer using x^{1/2} in your problems, no one can stop you. But majority of the population feels comfortable with that square root symbol so yeah depends ;)
