Anyone need help in Algebra 1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well I don't, but could you help me with my question? I'm in pre-algebra.

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

Okay.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is my question: Fred and his brother are both taking driving trips. Fred traveled 409 miles and used 11 gallons of gas. His brother traveled 523 miles and used 13 gallons of gas. 1)Fred told his brother that he gets better gas mileage.Do you agree with Fred? Justify your response by using mathematical language and show any necessary computional work. 2)Is the relationship between miles driven and gas used proportional ? Use a graph below to justify your response.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I especially need help on the second part.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There is a graph on the paper- how do you use that to show if the relationship between miles and gas used is proportional?

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

For the x-axis, label amount of miles and for the y-axis put the amount of gallons.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK but if Fred's gas mileage is 37.18 and his brother's is 40.230769, then how do you show that on the graph? How do you know if it is proportional?

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

How did you get those numbers?

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

Now I see what you did...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did the first part- Fred: 409/11=37.18. Fred's brother: 523/13=40.230769.

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

You can just graph the whole numbers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would it still work if you don't use the decimals?

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

Are you making your graph on paper?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

Then yes you can.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK now how do you find out if the numbers are proportional? Will I show hat by making the graph, because I also need to explain it in words.

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

Yes it is proportional because both x and y increase.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay I get it now... Thank you SO MUCH for your help! I really appreciate it!

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

No problem...glad I can help :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm doing algebra b 10 and I need help

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

Maybe...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you simplify 3/5a * 1/a^2

OpenStudy (pinksapphire):

I think it's 3/5a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

K thanks
