I assume you are asking about the American frontier. There were no "jobs" to be had, because there wasn't any factories or businesses to employ people. But there was plenty of work. Settling the frontier, means making permanent settlements in an (mostly) empty. So I'm not seeing overcrowding as a factor. By definition, the frontier is outside or at the fringe of the settled part of the country. Describing conditions as "stark" on the frontier seems apt. I mean there were no coffee shops on the corner, And not many corners or even roads. D is a throw away here. So is it A, because there were no "jobs" or C because it was stark. C looks like the best answer because even though there were no employers, folks had plenty of work to do just to stay alive. If they wanted Jobs they would have stayed home. Stark life, C
