Any one knows the explanation for this question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is A I have no idea why =_=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to think in terms of expansion of the thick-walled outer cells and the thin- walled inner cells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First tell me, will water move in or move out when the stalk is placed in a sucrose solution of high water potential?

OpenStudy (somy):

i think water comes into

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*into

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, right. Now see, the thinner-walled cells will expand more, while the thick-walled outer cells will expand very slightly due to the pressure exerted by the thick cell wall. Get it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But how do we tell the difference between A or D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Due to the difference in expansion, the stalk curves outwards, meaning the thick-walled cells will be on the (inner, shorter) side while the thin-walled cells will be on the (outer, longer) side. That's how you tell the difference between A and D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok Lastly (so sorry) @emcrazy14 what are they trying to imply by drawing the dark line? I don't even know what the dark line means :O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

See the original stalk? The dark coloured lines represent the outer thick-walled cells. So the dark coloured line in the options also represents the thick-walled outer cells (which expand less when water moves in)

OpenStudy (somy):

@emcrazy14 thnk u!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok now I get but you guys have to admit this is by far one of the most ridiculous question Cambridge ppl have come up with =_=

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hahahaha, there have been more ridiculous questions asked. xP I still didn't start preparing for the MCQs exams yet.\

OpenStudy (somy):

@emcrazy14 im so sad T_T me and KL-RC are preparing for our exam over skype, we did mcq test of one of the latest years and i made a lot of mistakes :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh-oh. Don't worry, @Somy . The key to getting good marks in MCQs is practising alot of questions. Think with a clear head and you'll get them right. x)

OpenStudy (somy):

hmm i'll try!! i'll do my best!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good Luck. Do as many questions as you can. A lot of them get repeated every year.

OpenStudy (somy):

thnk you :* @emcrazy14

OpenStudy (somy):

good luck to u too!!!! lest get best marks all of us!!!!! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. ^_^ YESSS! Lezz do it! :D
