Does anyone know how to do systems of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8x + 5y = 9 3x + 2y = 4

hero (hero):

I'd at least multiply both sides of the second equation by 2 to get 8x + 5y = 9 6x + 4y = 8 This way, when you subtract the equations you get 2x + y = 1 and y = -2x + 1 Now you could simply substitute y back into the first equation to get: 8x + 5(-2x + 1) = 9 Which will give you an equation in one variable. Solve for x.

hero (hero):

Let me know what you end up getting for x and y.

Would it be -2,5 for the answer?

hero (hero):

8x - 10x + 5 = 9 -2x = 4 x = 4/-2 x = -2 3(-2) + 2(y) = 4 -6 + 2y = 4 2y = 10 y = 10/2 y = 5 Correct
