let us ... say... set x = 4, let's see what happens to the fraction \(\bf \cfrac{x+1}{x-4}\qquad x={\color{brown}{ 4}}\qquad \cfrac{{\color{brown}{ 4}}+1}{{\color{brown}{ 4}}-4}\implies ?\) what do you think we get?
OpenStudy (dj3strella):
just 4
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
just 4? what would be our numerator and denominator?
OpenStudy (dj3strella):
well 4+1/4-4 isnt it 5/0

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
yeap
OpenStudy (dj3strella):
so its unequal to 5
OpenStudy (jdoe0001):
5/0 meaning \(\bf 5 \div 0\) and that gives us no number, since any number divided by 0 is an "undefined value"
and that'd be a no go for a fraction, so "x" must not equal 4 or must be 4, otherwise it'd set the fraction to "undefined"
it can be anything else, just not a number that sets the denominator to 0, because that'd make the fraction undefined
OpenStudy (dj3strella):
thank you @jdoe0001
