Check my Hypothesis and Conclusion Answers! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which is the conclusion of this statement? If a and b are negative, then a + b is negative. A. If a and b are negative, then a + b is negative. <---<---<--- B. If a + b is negative, then a and b is negative. C. a and b are negative. D. a + b is negative. @whpalmer4 @wolf1728 @wolfe8 @Awesome781 @Destinymasha

hero (hero):

There's a difference between the hypothesis portion of a statement and the conclusion portion of a statement.

hero (hero):

The "If" part of the statement represents the hypothesis. The "Then" part of the statement represents the conclusion.

hero (hero):

For example, If it rains today, then I will not go to the concert.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Awesome781 do u think im right?

hero (hero):

I will not go to the concert is the conclusion.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Who thinks I am right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes you are right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1+-1=-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it was multiplication or division it would be different....

OpenStudy (awesome781):

I also think u are correct :)

hero (hero):

@JOHN_R, the question asked "Which is the conclusion of the statement?".

hero (hero):

Are any of you familiar with the components of an "If Then" statement?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Hero then c would be the answer because they both are negative right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and yes i am familiar

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@HERO SO I WASN'T RIGHT?

hero (hero):

Let me ask you this @CrazyCountryGirl... If someone asked you to explain what a hypothesis and conclusion of an If Then statement is, what would you tell them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hypothesis - Pretty much your guess Conclusion - Your answer to the problem. I don't really wanna know how to do it, I just wanna know if I got it right. I can get my sister to explain it over the phone... @Hero

hero (hero):

If you don't really wanna know how to do it, and if your sister can explain it to you, then why are you here? If you want a blunt response, no, your GUESS is not correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you are working on a paper try and attach it so we can understand better

hero (hero):

@JOHN_R, this is not a difficult question at all.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know but im not understanding what shes asking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it seems easy but she makes it sound a little difficult

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm almost positive the answer is B.

hero (hero):

You think B is the answer because?

hero (hero):

Explain why you believe B is the answer.

hero (hero):

By the way, if you haven't yet read the link I posted, feel free to do so.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D!!! I meant D!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we are not saying your not smart just simply trying to make sure u understand as well as us....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is D the right answer? @Hero

hero (hero):

@CrazyCountryGirl, it doesn't matter what choice you pick, what I want you to do is to be able to justify the reasoning behind why you selected a particular answer choice. You should state something along the lines of, "I believe the answer is A, B, C, or D, because...." and then proceed from there. Simply stating "Is D right" is akin to guessing.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@hero No, I swear I'm not guessing I really believe it's D because They're saying that a and b are negative= a + b is negative Right, I'm trying to find a way to explain it, but I promise I didn't keep guessing. At first I read the question wrong.

hero (hero):

By the way, have you had a chance to visit that link I sent you yet?

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

What is the difference between A and D? They seem the same to me.

hero (hero):

A is the entire statement, D is the "q" portion of the statement. I'm surprised that isn't clear to you @wolf1728

OpenStudy (wolf1728):

Actually, I think the question is worded poorly and is not very clear to me at all. It states: Which is the conclusion of this statement? If a and b are negative, then a + b is negative. So if that is the "question" then the first "answer" is A. If a and b are negative, then a + b is negative. The "conclusion" of that statement is exactly the same as what is stated in the question.

hero (hero):

@wolf1728, you never learned about If "q", then "p" where "p" represents the hypothesis of the statement and "q" represents the conclusion? There are two things obvious here: 1. The statement is an "If, then" statement. 2. The conclusion, q, is in the "then" portion of the statement. I don't understand why you believe the question is worded poorly or what your confusion is regarding the statement. Everything seems obviously to me.
