x= what

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

what is the problem?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

x is a variable, just like v, c, b, s, and so on.... What is your specific problem ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x divided by 5 minus 2 then 4 x minus 1 =0 what is the value of x

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

x/5-2 4x-1=0 is that correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. Then it asks whats the value of x at the end of the question..

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Not sure about the first one but for the second you would add 1 to each side giving you 4x=1. Do you know what to do next?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea I think so...not too sure

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

What do you think you would do next for the second equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Divide x minuse 2 ??

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

For the second one you would divide each side by 4 giving you x=1/4.

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

are there answer choices or anything?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes x=2 x=4 x=0 and x=1

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

The first one doesn't say x/5-2=? or anything?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but its all as one problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thats how it starts

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

is it like a system of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

@mathmale can you help us?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hello! I'm going back to the beginning. @sleepyjess kindly typed out her interpretation of the math problem you @keosha described: x/5-2 4x-1=0 is that correct? Again I ask you to check that you've described the given problem correctly and that the equations above are OK. x/5-2 is not an equation and can thus not be solved. Did you mean x/5 = 2 ? This cannot be just one problem, if you have two equations in only one unknown (x). Once I have clarification from you on all of this, I'd be glad to help.
