Adaptive radiations occur when a species enters a new environment and rapidly expands to fill niches. Eg, the classic Darwin finches are thought to have colonized the island as one ancestral species, and differences is in food choice due to beak shapes caused further beak shape changes. These changes affected the mating calls. This eventually led to prezygotic reproductive isolation and a radiation of the single ancestral population into multiple, distinct species.
