The death of General Lee was also a major factor of the lose

OpenStudy (anonymous):

General Lee didn't die, though. He surrendered to Union forces led by Grant at Appomatox and lived the rest of his life as a respected figure to both the North and the South no matter what the color of your skin was. What's usually regarded as the biggest turning point in tipping the initiative into the Union's favor was the Battle of Gettysburg. There are other battles after that, but that was the biggest one that got the ball rolling in the North's favor. There was also Sherman's march to the Atlantic (which involved a lot of smaller battles) that cut through Georgia, burned Atlanta, and quickened the end of the war. By then, the South was starved of men, material, and time.
