can someone tell me how y=8x is different from y = 8/x

OpenStudy (mathmale):

y=8x is a "linear function;" if your independent variable, x, increases, your dependent variable also increases, 8 times faster than does x. y=8/x is a "rational function;" if x increases, y decreases. It's well worth learning the shapes of the graphs of these common functions.
