Alright so you have two water barrels with capacities in the ratio 6 to 5. That means one water barrel is 6/5 larger than the other. The question says that your larger barrel holds 10 gallons more than the smaller barrel. Now, for this question we can say that the ratio 6:5 is a simplified fraction for the relationship between the two barrels. The larger barrel holding 6 gallons and the smaller holding 5 gallons. What would be the difference in gallons between the two barrels then?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the difference now is one so do i times each one by ten?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well yes, since the question says the difference between the two barrels is 10 gallons. So you multiply both 6 and 5 by then. The larger number is obviously your larger barrel.

Thank you! I think i get it now!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and when you divide the larger barrel by the smaller barrel (its capacity), you get a simplified fraction: 6/5 which is your ratio. That is how you check if it works.

No problem!
