Could someone explain to me how to solve radical equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ans=4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well how did you get that?.. I want to know how..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can get rid of a square root by squaring. (Cube roots by cubing, etc)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so it would turn into x^2+25?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Example: solve √(2x+9) - 5 = 0 isolate the square root: √(2x+9) = 5 square both sides: 2x+9 = 25

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now it should be easier to solve! Move 9 to right: 2x = 25-9 Divide by 2: x = 16/2 = 8 Answer: x = 8 Check: √(2·8+9) - 5 = √(25) - 5 = 5 - 5 = 0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so would my problem go to x+5-1=2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay which would turn into.. -2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x=-2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is -2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Above you said 4... So is it squared or just -2?
