OpenStudy (john_es):

\[a_1=-5\\ a_2=-13\\ a_3=-21\\ a_4=-29\\ a_5=-37\\\]

OpenStudy (john_es):

Because, \[a_2=a_1-8\\ a_3=a_2-8\] And go on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ah okay thanks :) so then i would do a4 - a3?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[a _{4} - a _{3}\]

OpenStudy (john_es):

Why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh well i jus figured cause you did a2 = a1−8 and a3=a2−8.. sorry guess i still dont understand what the problem is askng me to do.

OpenStudy (john_es):

The problem ask you to find the four following terms of a sequence. For this to be accomplished, they give you the first term and a recurrence relation (the definition of the sequence). With this, you need to find a_2, a_3, a_4 and a_5. These are the terms I posted. Each term of the sequence, except the first, is obtained from the previous term as you see.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay.. but how did you get the answer. like for a_3? thanks.

OpenStudy (john_es):

Well you know a_1=-5. Then you need to know a_2, \[a_2=a_1-8=-5-8=-13\] Now, that you know a_2, you can calculate a_3, \[a_3=a_2-8=-13-8=-21\] And go on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay starting to make a little more sense.. to find a4 you would do a4 - a3.=.. -8 - -29 - 8 -- 21?

OpenStudy (john_es):

Yes, \[a_4=a_3-8=-21-8=-29\]
