@Phebe I am not exactly sure what level in the evolution of these organism groups the question refers to. I think it might be a question leading you to realize that all organisms, land or aquatic, evolved in aquatic environments. After the ancestor(s) evolved, the subsequent species that can from this ancestor(s) followed three patterns: 1-Stayed aquatic 2-Moved to land and stayed (humans, deer, tree snakes, etc) 3-Moved to land and then returned to water (whales, hippos, sea snakes, and more)
