OpenStudy (phebe):

12. For a behavior to evolve under the influence of natural selection, that behavior must have been influenced by what?

OpenStudy (phebe):

@ShadowLegendX

OpenStudy (shreehari499):

@mrdoldum Is here! Then why to worry!

OpenStudy (phebe):

lol truu i didn't know

OpenStudy (phebe):

so are u @mrdoldum gonna help me

OpenStudy (phebe):

i be right back but still comment on this k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ug, another poorly worded question. I am not 100% sure what the question wants. Taken literally, the question answers itself. A behavior must be under selection in order to undergo any evolution. Do you have anymore context? Can you tell me about what you discussed in class?

OpenStudy (phebe):

What is the behavior influenced by? is the question basically

OpenStudy (phebe):

@mrdoldum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, see that is the thing. We call that selection. There can be positive selection and negative selection. So, for a behavior to evolve it would depend on the behavior on whether it evolved under positive or negative selection.

OpenStudy (phebe):

ok thanx but hold on k

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sure.

OpenStudy (phebe):

ok well um... i get it i think

OpenStudy (phebe):

its probably negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Phebe It could also be discussion innate vs. learned behaviors. In one case the selection would be working directly on a gene or set of genes, while learned behaviors would result in a less specific set of changes in the organisms genome.

OpenStudy (phebe):

ok so it deals with genetics right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, evolution has to work on genes or it is not occurring*. Even in learned behaviors there must be some sort of genetic basis if you dig deep enough into it. However, a learned behavior may not need a specific allele or set of alleles. It could be learned by a very broad range of alleles, while at the extreme, a instinctive behavior might require a specific allele.

OpenStudy (phebe):

ok thank you very muchhh XDXD

OpenStudy (shreehari499):

Yeah! Thats @mrdoldum ! Thank you sir! Even I had a doubt in that!

OpenStudy (phebe):

lol ikr XD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*some things can be past on from parent to offspring that affect the organism but not the DNA sequences. We refer to such things as epigenetics. This is a rather advanced topic and probably more than you want to hear unless you are in college/university.

OpenStudy (phebe):

ok thank you @mrdoldum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is A) Influenced by genes. B) Neither adaptive nor harmful. C) Acquired through learning. D) Related to predator avoidance. @mrdoldum @Phebe @Shreehari499

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@murp101 make your own thread. Also, that question does not make any sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, she/he is saying that those were the answer choices. So which on of them is it? @mrdoldum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mrdoldum did you get the answer.... is a b c or d??? murp listed the answers.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@epicpanda I see what you mean by answers, he was doing a jeopardy thing. The thing is though, this question is crap. I don't need answers BTW, I am about 2 months from finishing a PhD in evolutionary molecular systematics of the Boletales (Fungi). I only get on here to help out students. I come from a family of teachers and I like teaching and helping others learn.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah you're right @mrdoldum and that's fantastic! Best of luck to you my friend!
